Throughout this semester, we continue to explore two key concepts: 1) Peoplehood, and 2) Settler Colonialism. For term paper, you will explore how Settler Colonialism has impacted historically – and continues to impact today – Peoplehood among a particular Indigenous community of your choosing. Please write an essay that: Identifies one Indigenous people who have been affected by Settler Colonialism (in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia or another setting). ***Please write about the Comanche Nation Tribe.*** Describes key ways in which the four elements of Peoplehood – relationship to place, language, sacred history, and ceremonial cycle – traditionally were expressed by that people. Examine the ways in which Settler Colonialism has historically impacted each of the four elements of Peoplehood. Demonstrates the manner in which Settler Colonialism continues to reverberate within the community today. Discuss how the community has worked to maintain the elements of Peoplehood in the face of Settler Colonialism in the past and/or today. Please note, this is not merely a “history of the tribe” that you choose. Instead, you are being asked to connect and analyze that history to the concept of Settler Colonialism and its continuing impacts on the elements of Peoplehood. How did the community/culture you choose express Peoplehood? How has Settler Colonialism (its practices and/or conceptions) had an impact on that specific community? How has the community responded? Here are the specific requirements for the essay: It must be between 2,000 and 2,500 words long. Clearly and strongly address all elements of Peoplehood for the community you choose. Clearly address how Settler Colonialism has impacted each element of Peoplehood for the community you choose. You may choose any Indigenous people in the United States, Canada, New Zealand or Australia except for the Tohono O’odham, Ojibwe, Inuit or Hopi. Per the syllabus: “All writing assignments must be typed: use 1” margins, double spacing, and 11 or 12 point Times or Times New Roman font.
