Through the perspective of a contemporary designer, you are to write a formal academic research essay
about the Bauhaus that answers the questions: “What is good design?” and why does it matter that design
is done well?
Description:
Research the rules or characteristics of good design as a general exercise. You will want to
identify and research a contemporary designer and examples of their works too. Study their
design ethos. Take notes as you do this constantly thinking about answering the questions: “what
is good design?” and why does it matter? Remember, whatever you ID as characteristics of good
design you must provide specific examples explaining how the characteristic is identified in that
work and why it matters.
Evaluation:
Your essay should be written in formal academic style and have a thesis that responds to the
main question. A well-written essay must have a clear structure, with an introduction (including
a thesis statement that is underlined), a body, and concluding paragraph. This does not mean the
entire essay is three paragraphs! Your response should make consistent reference to specific
examples You should also consider the value in presenting images of designs to support your
arguments. The paper will be largely free of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors.
