This weeks readings outline the intimate relationships between identity and language variation (Macaulay, 2011) and in previous weeks you’ve read about common language myths and how African American English/Black English is often derided as incorrect English when it is in fact a fully regular language variety like any other (Smitherman, 1986).
Based on the argument that Wolfram (2014) presents, how do you see the role of language variation in doing TESOL and/or fostering intercultural communication? What do you think of the suggestions that Wolfram offers on how to incorporate variation into TESOL lessons? How do you think this approach could be useful in your future teaching/career?
There are no right or wrong answers to this discussion prompt! The goal of this assignment is to share your understanding of the material. You are not summarizing the text. Instead, you are expected to respond by asking questions, making connections between pieces, and synthesizing the themes in the readings with your own experiences with language.
