This assignment uses the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Medieval Art Collection as the source for images to create a virtual exhibition: Medieval Art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Most museums provide brief labels that accompany works of art. Sometimes labels include factual information about the work’s art historical significance (i.e.: Van Gogh completed this image soon after moving to Paris where he first saw paintings by the Impressionists). Others direct viewers to make connections between form and meaning (i.e: Van Gogh’s use of thickly textured paint, a technique called impasto, contributes to its expressive impact.) Still others might offer information about iconography (i.e.: Van Gogh may have included the crows in his painting as a symbol of death.)
INSTRUCTIONS
Choose 4 objects from the Medieval Art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art and write museum labels for a general audience (a museum visitor who has little or no previous knowledge about art). You will need to identify the object by indicating the artist, title, date of production, and media (does not count toward word count.) Then write a paragraph or 2 between 100 and 150 words about the object (this is your caption [museum wall label/text]).
You should rely on your own observations and any information you have learned from the textbook or in the course modules. Write clearly and succinctly.
Some things to consider:
• What is the goal of your label?
• Think about what information you found most useful in reading about the object.
• What do you think are the most important things for the viewer to know about this object?
What information will best help the viewer understand the work’s historical context or artistic significance?
