The second part of the semester includes readings and videos on the topic of the types of stages, set design, costume design, lighting design, and sound design. The following project will offer you the opportunity to develop ideas of what your short play would look like on stage.
Following are the steps you will follow to create what you will finally submit as an explanation of what your play would look like on stage.
Step 1
Briefly explain what is happening in the scene.
Step 2
On what kind of stage will your play be performed and why?
Step 3
How will the set on stage look for this play? Discuss how you would design the scene. What kind of furniture or objects will you have in the scene? Will there be any kind of background to the set that will aid in the audience recognizing where it takes place? There may be other elements that you want to add or show by using pictures or drawings or in some way, your own creativity.
Step 4
What would the costumes look like? What colors and why? What style and why?
Step 5
Include in your discussion how you would light the scene, what colors or color would you use? and why would you use the colors and the style of lighting? For example, the use of a dark shadowy lighting provides mystery in the scene.
Step 6
Finally include what kind of sound, if any, would you use to enhance the scene or if you aren’t using sound, why not? This could include special effect sounds, music, etc.
