The Paper will begin with a history of Oakland Parks briefly pre 1960’s but mainly post 1960’s. It is important to briefly look at the current state of Oakland parks. It is important to go over the politics of parks and how it influences the design/creation of said parks.

The park will then take a closer look at 2 different cases where participatory design was used in the development of parks in Oakland (Union Point Park & Lafayette Square Park). Using these 2 examples as well the articles provided the paper will then critique/analyze the model of participatory design as well as the social aspects tied to it. create some theories and speculative solutions to answer the question of how can we improve participatory design and use it to improve the status of parks.
