The paper should be a minimum of 6 pages in length (not including references), double-spaced, one-inch
margins, 12-point Times or Times-New Roman font, with a cover-page. Each paper should include the
incidence/prevalence of the disease, risk factors, how it is transmitted (infectious diseases), causes
(chronic diseases), symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention measures, in addition to a synthesis
of where the research currently stands on the topic, and where you think the research should go next.
These last two parts carry the highest weighting for the grade. Please note that scientific papers should
NOT include quotations – points will be deducted for any that are included. Papers will be uploaded to
Canvas and are due according to the topic you choose and which section of the course that topic
corresponds with; refer to the class schedule for specific dates. For example, infectious disease papers
will be due before the first exam, chronic disease papers will be due before the second exam, and
neurological/psychiatric illness papers will be due before the final exam. Try to choose your topic early so
that you can be pulling the scientific articles, reading, making an outline of the paper, etc., well before it
is due. You may want to self-impose some deadlines for each of these steps, and then add them to your
calendar.
Appropriate SCIENTIFIC references and citations are expected (in APA format – see below) and you are
expected to use at least 10 scientific references (websites do not count!). You will be graded on proper
spelling and grammar. Note: deductions will be made for using websites (outside of one reference for
a description of the disease or disorder). The writing center on campus is available for those who need
extra help with their writing. I recommend that all students read their papers out loud to check for
grammatical errors before turning them in.
