Reflection papers function as midterm and final exams. Four prompts will be given and students must write TWO (2) short essays for any of the three prompts. Each essay must consist of 800-1,000 words, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1-inch margins. Include four (4) references for each response.
Important – you must properly CITE the texts!!! Citation is not quotation. DO NOT QUOTE!!! If you use quotes your response will be given a zero. You must properly understand, restate, and synthesize the argument of the author in your own words.
1) Our readings argue that birthright citizenship was a right granted to non-white people only through decades of struggle, activism, and even a civil war. The Trump administration sought to end birthright citizenship. What is birthright citizenship? What is the importance of birthright citizenship for all those born in the United States, but especially for nonwhite people? What does the term “anchor baby” mean and what does it have to do with birthright citizenship? Should birthright citizenship be eradicated or protected?
2) What is neoliberalism? What does neoliberalism have to do with immigration, detention, and deportation? What is an alternative to neoliberalism?
3) Throughout the readings in this class, a number of authors have put forth the idea of the paradox of globalization. At the same time that global capitalism expands transnationally across borders bringing down barriers to commerce and trade, there has also been a proliferation of walls and barriers built to keep people from moving freely across these same borders. Discuss three reasons why states build walls and militarize borders. Do walls and other forms of intensified border enforcement succeed at deterring the unwanted movement of people across these borders as claimed by these three reasons? What is an alternative solution for each?
4) Throughout this class we have analyzed a number of issues related to immigration. What are some solutions? If you were a politician, how would you address the immigration related issues and attempt to solve them? For this question you are to develop solutions for three (3) major issues surrounding immigration. You are free to choose any three issues we have discussed in class. It is suggested that you create an introduction and a conclusion and develop each of your solutions individually in a short paragraph.
Readings will be provided if needed
