Purpose
The purpose of the final project is to:
give you a chance to research a topic that is of personal interest to you
allow you to process the data for this project using the Python skills you have developed during the course
Final Project Demo
Video includes review of where to find data for your project. Also shows an example project for you to review. ( I will put all the screenshots for video in additional materials)
Telling a Story With Data
Your final project should be a portfolio piece that you can use to demonstrate the skills you’ve learned in this class. As such you should make sure that you are researching a topic that interests you and that you can accomplish in the time allotted.
Final Project Package (150 pts)
The final project package is the complete bundle of all your scripts, presentation materials, data and even notes that you have brought together to finish this project. Because each project is very individual it is expected that each project package will contain different artifacts; however, at a minimum your project package should include:
(50 pts) a python script (data_parsing.py) in which you parse two different data sources (if you parsed your data in Jupyter Notebooks you don’t need a separate script, just make sure you label a section in your notebook and provide additional details about why you chose the data sources that you chose)
(30 pts) scripts (data_cleaning.py) that you used for cleaning your data (if you cleaned your data in Jupyter Notebooks you don’t need a separate script, just make sure you label a section in your notebook and provide any additional textual clarification for why you chose the approach you took)
(50 pts) a data analysis script (data_analysis.py) that’s shows how you calculated three different analytical techniques such as correlation coefficients, averages, and/or counts of data (if you did your data analysis in Jupyter Notebooks you don’t need a separate script, just make sure you label it clearly in your notebook and provide textual clarification for why you used the analytical techniques that you did)
(10 pts) presentation materials – if you are using a jupyter notebook then you should include an export of the ipynb file. If you are using an external website such as Django or Adobe Spark then include a simple text file with the url in it.
(10 pts) a copy of the datasets – if the datasets are too large to include in the package then some sample data will be fine (named data.csv, data.json or data.xml, if multiple files are included then just append a number to the end such as data2.json).
Presentation Requirements (50 pts)
Your presentation should have five major sections, each section is telling a piece of the overall story you are telling with your data. You will be posting your presentations as a video in the FINAL PRESENTATIONS discussion. Use the provided directions for uploading your video using the Kaltura tools.
You should plan for the presentation to take 3-5 minutes and cover the following:
Background of your question(10pts)
State clearly why you chose the question you did and what the question is
The data sources that you found that helped you answer your question
Why these data sources (as compared to others) helped you to answer the question
Difficulties in taming data(10pts)
Identify the biggest hurdles that you had to overcome as you processed your data. Difficulties could include programming challenges, messy or non-standardized data, or problems with finding useful data.
Overcoming the hurdles(10pts)
Demonstrate how you overcame each of the hurdles that you encountered in #2.
Please show some code examples and describe how they helped you tame the data.
Results and Major Findings(10pts)
Describe the major findings that you discovered in your data. In this section you should present the statistics that you calculated for your data. Use 2-3 graphs to highlight your major points. Each graph should have introductory text that describes what it is showing and text that follows that describes why the finding is significant.
Next Steps(10pts)
In this section you will describe what you would have done if you had more time or resources available to you. If you were unable to answer all of your question then you can mention that here.
Assessment Criteria
For the presentation portion you will be graded on how well you follow the major sections of telling a story with data. Presentation materials should contain text to describe each of the sections that is appropriate to the medium (e.g., powerpoint may be less wordy than something like Jupyter Notebooks but both should adequately cover the major points).
By the way:
1. I will appreciate if you write a small summary for answering the presentation questions.
2. Before this assignment, there has a proposal for this assignment, I will also put that proposal assignment instructions and answers in additional materials as reference for you to choice the topic.
