You will listen to the first two episodes of 1619 (Links to an external site.), a podcast by the New York Times.  This podcast examines the origins of United States institutions, American capitalism, and the nation’s long and trying relationship with race The assignment will be in response to this podcast and many of it’s themes.
You will write a four-page research paper, responding to one of the following prompts.
Prompts:
1.    How does the origin story of the U.S. change if we mark the beginning of U.S. history in 1619 instead of 1776?
2.    How do societal structures developed to support the enslavement of Black people, and the anti-Black racism that was cultivated in the U.S. to justify slavery, influence many aspects of modern laws, policies, systems, and culture?
3.    How have resistance, innovation, and advocacy by Black Americans over the course of American history contributed to the nation’s wealth and the strengthening of its democracy?
4.    How has activism by Black Americans throughout U.S. history led to policies that benefit all people living in the U.S.?
5.    How was the expansion of the U.S. shaped and made possible by enslaved laborers?
In your essay, you should rely on the first two episodes of 1619 as a source.  You are required to incorporate quotes from the episodes into your essay.  In addition, you must use one outside, scholarly, peer-reviewed source. Please keep in mind that you are required to use both the podcast episodes and an outside source in order to fulfill the requirements of this essay.  Using these two sources well will account for 20 points of your total paper grade.
The quotes included in your submission should be incorporated into your work with proper MLA or Chicago citation.  Make sure you answer all aspects of the prompt and make sure to organize your thoughts in an effective way.
