Overview:
Building on the research and analysis you performed in the annotated bibliography, you will write a
research-based argument urging your intended audience—a specific group, institution, or
organization—to rethink an issue or policy. The primary objective of this paper is to construct a
convincing argument using the language, style, and rhetorical strategies employed by other writers in
this field.
Audience and Rhetoric:
The audience for this essay is a real group, institution, or organization that participates in or is affected
by the topic of your research question. Your readers may be members of this group/institution and are
likely familiar with the issue you are addressing in your proposal. It is appropriate to assume that some
of your readers will be skeptical of a policy change and may not welcome the proposal at first glance.
Thus, the key is to consider the types of rhetorical strategies you will need to use in order to reach and
convince this audience. Keep in mind the rhetorical strategies we explored during our analysis unit—
logos, ethos, and pathos. How can you create a logical/reasonable framework for your argument
(logos)? How will you establish your credibility (ethos)? To what extent will you connect to your reader’s
emotions (pathos)?
Requirements:
Write a 5- to 7-page (1,500+ words) research-based argument that includes a minimum of five sources
from your annotated bibliography as support/evidence. You may conduct further research to include
sources that were not a part of your annotated bibliography. Because you are attempting to employ the
language, style, and strategies used by professionals in this debate, you should model the
shape/organization of your proposal after those professionals’ publications.
Citations:
Your paper should follow APA format for in-text citations and the works-cited page. All paraphrases and
direct quotes must include an in-text citation. Any works referenced in your paper must be included in
the works-cited page. For reference on APA formatting, use the Purdue’s Online Writing Lab as a
resource.
