OBJECTIVE: This assignment is called the Political Parties Essay. The objective of this assignment is for you to compare the platforms (issues and policies), messaging and behavior of third parties versus the two major parties (Democrats and Republicans).
INSTRUCTIONS: First, you will view two debate videos (“U.S. Third Party Presidential Debate” and the “Trump v. Biden Presidential Debate”) and assess their content according to the elements mentioned in the objective above.
Important: Set the Third Party Debate Video to the 1:08 (one hour and eight minute mark) and begin watching from there. You do not need to watch the preliminary panel discussion before the debate.
After viewing the videos, please respond with two lists (as requested in item #1 below) and in 2 or 3 paragraphs of content respond to the questions below (Items #2, #3, and #4). Put everything on the same document in a word or word compatible file.
1.) Make two lists, one for the major parties and the other for third parties and write down the most important issues brought up in each debate (at least 5 in each list).
2.) Compare and contrast the behavior of the candidates in each video and tell me why you think the dynamic was so different in the two debates.
3.) Who seemed more honest in their response to policy questions, the major parties or third parties? Defend the position you took. In defending your position think about which parties have the most incentives or disincentives to tell the truth. Also, distinguish between different issues that seemed honest and important versus issues that seemed phony and hollow.
4.) Would you consider voting for a third party or would you stick with the major parties? In your response, base your vote on policy comparisons rather than on how competitive the parties are.
