Start with a general botanical description including scientific name. (10 points) b. Economic importance of the crop (part harvested/why are they being produced?). c. Presents/discuss the crop’s general characteristics, flower morphology, type of reproduction, mode of propagation and pollination. Must include explanation on why your crop is self or cross pollinated. Part II. Discuss the breeding objectives and germplasm collection. (15 points) d. Discuss all the important traits that are vital in the variety selection of your crop (disease resistance, high yielding, hybrid, etc). e. Discuss the breeding objectives of the breeding program. f. Explain how you will build up your germplasm collection. From which source(s) will you get your seed samples (Germplasm). g. What kind of seeds you intend to produce, hybrid, open pollinated, etc. h. Include a cultivar name to your crop. Ex. “Sparkle F1” Part III. Breeding process. (25 points) a. Discuss the trait(s) that you would like to improve in your crop. b. Apply the concepts you have learned from the course. Concepts like pattern of inheritance, allelic interactions, gene expression, etc. should be integrated in the paper. c. Develop a plan on how you will identify the genes and how you will stably integrate them in your crop. d. Mention the origin of your gene(s), it can be from the same species or from different species. e. What breeding method(s) you will use? Traditional, alternative or both? f. What specific method you will use? Ex. If you selected traditional, you need to select the most appropriate method like pureline breeding technique, etc. g. What method(s) will you use for artificial hybridization? Write a 4-5 pages report (double spaced, excluding title page, pictures and graphs) for the crop you selected. Use the following format: ? Font: 12 point- Times New Roman or Arial; double spaced ? Margins: 1-inch margin on left; 0.5-inch margin- top, bottom and right ? Page numbering: Yes – at bottom right hand corner of page ?
