M‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ovie Summary & Analysis Assignment You will watch the movie Erin Brockovich. This assignment is intended to introduce students to a variety of legal topics and issues through analysis of a legal-oriented film. While movies do not always portray legal issues accurately and often sensationalize the practice of law, they can at least provide an entertaining way to become exposed to controversial issues that can be explored further and discussed in class. As you watch the film, you will need to be active rather than passive in your viewing since you’re not watching it only for entertainment. Take notes and maybe write a short outline while you watch. In your paper you should answer the following questions: • What area(s) of law does the film involve? Is it a criminal or civil (Links to an external site (https://www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/justice-studies/blog/civil-law-versus-criminal-law/).) matter (or both)? If criminal, what crime or crimes? If civil, what area or areas of law (e.g., family law, contract law, tort law, constitutional law, etc.)? • What ethical or moral issues are raised in the film? Length: Your submission should be approximately 4 pages, double-spaced. Format for Submission: Your submission shoul‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍d be made on Canvas (attaching a Word file using Arial font, 12-point type-size). You should include all of the following section numbers and headings in the following order: 1 You’re Name 2 Title of Film ( Erin Brokovich ) 3 Summary of Plot(1-2 paragraphs): Briefly and clearly explain the story that the film is telling. To be clear, your paper is not a movie review. Explain what happened in a way that a reader who has not watched the film can understand. Remember, this should be a summary so do not try to explain everything that happened in the film. Instead, use your judgment to explain only the most important aspects of the story. Be sure to concentrate on any events important to the legal aspects of the film. 4 Analysis of Legal Elements: Your analysis should involve a discussion of the legal issues (as discussed above) portrayed in the film. Use specific examples to illustrate. 5 Analysis or Moral/Ethical Issues: Your analysis should also involve a discussion of the ethical issues and/or the various duties of a corporation which are raised in the movie (issues we’ve discussed in class) Proofread carefully! Make sure you’re using correct organization, grammar, spelling, and that you’re writing is clear and u‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍nderstandable
