Intro to African American Humanities Final Essay
Throughout the semester, we have been reading about the importance of both knowing and developing one’s identity in the face of the many obstacles we are challenged with in life.
Here is what you need to do:
Choose at least three examples from the works discussed in class. Discuss how the works you chose reflect, helped shape, or are important to African American identity or culture.
You can discuss how the works relate to your own sense of identity; or why the works were important to you; or why they were significant to African American identity and culture in general.
Consider how the readings in this class ‘talk’ about racial identity. Consider your opinions on these ideas and your responses to the readings. Remember: as you write your essay, provide proof from our readings. I want to hear your voice and your ideas, but I want to hear that voice in conversation with the authors we have read.
Include a Works Cited page at the end (not part of the minimum # of pages). The main source for all the works cited is Shaw University Moodle. Include the author’s name, title of the article, source (Shaw University Moodle), and date of access.
This is an academic essay, meaning that it will have a title, an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It will be graded heavily on content, but organization, development, expression, mechanics, and information literacy will also count. Make sure you revise the essay before you submit it.
