Cherishing Nature: Exploring the Intersection of Creative Writing and Nonfiction in the Face of Climate Crisis

You have read a selection of poems, a fiction excerpt (more to come), an array of nonfiction (or journalism), and several short documentary films. If you stare long enough (one of the hallmarks of a fiction writer), you may find that some of the pieces speak to each other, however subtly.
For this assignment, choose a creative writing piece (poetry or fiction) and a nonfiction piece (the articles or films) and stare. See if the theme of cherishing nature is hinted at or if it courses throughout the work. How do the two genres inform each other? What do they both value? Is the language different? Can you find the same literary devices (see terms) in both?
Be sure to make the first sentence or two a specific one (thesis), one that lets your reader know which works you are discussing and what ideas they share. Remember, this is your keen perception, your thoughts.

HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)

The poem “Earth” by Mary Oliver was chosen as the creative writing work for this project, and the three articles about the effects of climate change on the earth were taken from The New York Times. Despite the genre differences, both pieces emphasize the worth of valuing the environment and the urgency of action to combat the climate problem.

The theme of Oliver’s poem “Earth” is the interdependence of all living things and the importance of protecting the environment. The poem exhorts readers to appreciate the earth’s beauty and its continued existence. The authors of the nonfiction articles talk about the negative effects of climate change on the planet and how it disproportionately affects some groups. The essays exhort readers to act to slow down climate change and to support those who would be most adversely affected by it.

The two genres complement one another by providing various viewpoints on the same subject. While the nonfiction articles present data and scientific proof to support the seriousness of the situation, Oliver’s poem takes a more sentimental and individual approach to the value of nature. In contrast to the nonfiction articles, which use more technical language to discuss the implications of climate change, Oliver’s poem uses figurative language to create emotions. However, to get their points through, both works make use of literary tropes like imagery, metaphor, and symbolism.

In conclusion, the literary pieces examined for this project show how we all respect nature and how urgently we need to address climate catastrophe. Although the genres may be different, they give complementary viewpoints and emphasize how critical it is to address this important issue.
