The purpose of this paper is to eye on the banking and financial system in a particular country (not the U.S.) and perform an economic study of the topic using the methods and models discussed in class. The paper is expected to address, but not limited to, the main points listed below. The term paper requires a minimum of 4 pages (excluding charts and graphs) and is worth of 100 points.
Your paper should cover the following:
Pick a particular country, cannot be the United States.
Introduce this country’s background, for example, history and economy.
Introduce this country’s currency, for example, its history, values, and exchange rates to major currencies, interest rates, etc.
Introduce this country’s banking and financial system, for example, its central bank, the head and/or board members of the central bank, the major commercial banks and financial intermediaries, its financial markets, and the major tools that the central bank uses to influence the economy and financial markets, etc.
Illustrate and analyze this country’s financial situation, issues, problems, and/or challenges. Your analysis should include quantitative as well as qualitative information and reason.
Explain its government’s recent monetary policy. How does the government address the financial situation, issues, problems, and/or challenges, as mentioned above?
How do you evaluate this country’s banking and financial system? How well does it support its economy? What are your recommendations and suggestions to it?
My expectation is that you will use information and methods covered in the course, but that you will also bring in material you discover on your own. Your analysis must be supported by graphical and/or mathematical depictions/descriptions of this country’s banking and financial situations and issues, important economic features (money demand/supply, Quantity Theory of Money, Fisher Effect, etc.), and the economic advantages of your recommended action. Ideally, you will include would also like to see some real-world numbers pertaining to your analysis. You don’t need to do statistical analysis, but you should demonstrate quantitative knowledge of the magnitude and scope of the analysis.
Some hints:
Your job is not to convince me to agree with you or for me to support the same policy, market or other solutions to the issue you choose to address. Rather, your job is to make the argument well.
On a related note, while I do not intend to take specific point deductions for spelling, grammatical or other errors, I do expect that your writing will be good enough that it does not distract from your ideas. You will, in other words, get higher marks for ideas well-articulated.
Please include the following on your first page: a title for your paper; your name; the name of this course; the date; and the word count.
Please include the following sections: Introduction (or Background); Analysis; Conclusions (and/or Recommendations); and References (aka Sources, Works Cited, or Bibliography).
References may include a mix of academic and non-academic sources, but you should not rely exclusively on material from the popular press, Wikipedia, etc.
