For this project, you will write a 1,000 to 1,200-word paper assessing the political significance of a map. You’ll start with the required reading on maps from Week 2 (Branch Territory attachment) , and then apply these ideas to a specific, real-world map. You’ll choose a map from those listed below and use the readings listed below it to inform your analysis. You can agree or disagree with any of the sources you use, and you may (optional) incorporate ideas and/or short quotations from additional course readings. Step 1: Re-read the reading “Territory ” by Jordan Branch from Week 2. Step 2: Choose one of the maps listed below and read the secondary analysis included below it. Step 3: Write a short paper that addresses the following: What is the historical and political context for this map? Who is creating and who is using (or just viewing) this map and why? What impact does the map have on how the state sponsoring or creating it sees itself and its relations with other states (or non-state actors)? What does this state or entity’s exercise in mapfare tell us about its role in international relations? Note that your paper should have a thesis–your answer to questions 3 and/or 4 above. You should tell the reader what your thesis is going to be in the paper’s introduction.
