For this assignment I picked a random student from our class blog to reply to. Basically the reply has to just be friendly stating any thing relevant to the students entry which I pasted below. Please cite one source from chapter 9 in the text book which I will provide the website and credentials to access in the chat that also is relevant to the student that I have chosen response. It can be anything from pointing out something that you agree with in the other students response or some thing that you related with in the reading of chapter 9 that the student also brought up.——-
Here is my classmates original BLOG ENTRY we are submitting the BLOG REPLY to—- As of this week, Halloween movies are extremely popular. I think the time of year plays a big role in what is popular at a given time. For example, once December is here everyone will turn to Christmas songs, movies, and books, but in October everyone likes to watch scary movies and listen to spooky songs. Same thing goes for when its summer and people want to listen to upbeat party music unlike when its winter and people tend to listen to more casual music. The public can also decide what is and what isn’t popular. Usually how it works is a form of media is released and celebrities advertise it or trailers/previews for it come out on tv and people will slowly begin to learn about it. Then word spreads and others begin to view the media too. If the media blows up then it becomes popular, but if people talk badly about it then the media will become irrelevant in a couple of days until something else is released. In the Nakayama textbook it said that “popular culture texts do not have to win over the majority of people to be “popular”’ (Nakayama 352). People differ in the perceptions of what is popular because everyone likes different movies and genres and different song styles. Not everyone has the same taste. Lastly popular culture influences me in everyday life because sometimes I watch something or listen to something just because all my friends did, and I want to fit in and know the topic of conversation. Popular culture doesn’t only influence my life, but it influences everyone around me as well. According to a scholarly source, “not only does popular culture play a big role in the taste of the public, but it has a particularly large influence on teenagers. Teenagers tend to utilize the internet when it comes to cultural involvement. The internet encourages cultural participation and communication for teenagers. “Popular cultural activities like going to the cinema and pop festivals are part of young people’s interests and youth culture”. Participation in these kinds of activities are often very important for shaping the identity of teenagers because it allows them to be a part of the youth culture and begin to identify their own interests and disinterests”. Overall, I think popular culture has an influence on many people’s lives and what is popular one day is not popular the next. Popular culture continues to change every single day depending on societies interests, but not everyone has an interest in what is popular at the time.
