For this 2-page writing assignment, you should prepare an executive summary of the results of an energy audit. Please see the “how to write an Executive Summary” page for details. But these are just guidelines: I don’t care what font, font size, margins, etc. that you use. That’s not how they do it out in the workplace. Just make it a professional looking document, geared towards the “client” who owns the building you audit. You can even use fake letterhead for your “energy audit firm” if you want to make this more fun!
The assignment can be completed on your home, dorm building, parents house, place of work, or anywhere else. Look critically at how the place is powered and how that power is used. 1) Where are the weak links? A 30 year old AC unit or refrigerator? A drafty building with old single-pane aluminum slider windows? These are just examples, so explore more on your own. 2). Where are the good things (if any)? A new furnace (<3 years old)? New attic insulation? These are just examples, so explore more on your own. 3) What are your recommendations for the "building owner?" List recommended upgrades from cheapest to most expensive, and provide any web links you can find to resources at Southern California Edison, the state of CA, and/or the US government/USDOE that can provide financial assistance or tax breaks for the improvements. Remember, you don't have to use any specific technology (like infrared cameras) or take any special angle on the project. For example, I once had a student who raised Iguanas and exotic snakes. They did their energy audit to estimate what their existing electricity costs were for a year, and compared that to what it would cost for a year of electricity if they upgraded the lights and heat lamps. Another student looked at what the cost savings would be if they upgraded their grandparents house lights to LED's and replaced the old incandescent bulbs. You are limited to one page of text (single spaced), and a second page with any pictures, graphs, table, maps, references, etc that you want to include.
