Focus on synthesis rather than synopsis. Do not simply recount what was written in the readings. Give the reader (in your own words) a concise overview of the main arguments, themes and concepts.
Describe the major strength of the reading, the major weakness, and give your overall opinion/evaluation of the reading.
Focus on critical thinking.
What points were effective (or not) in supporting the claim/argument and why (or why not)?
Focus on critiquing content over style, organization, and/or execution (rigor over prose).
Are there holes in the argument’s logic?
If you do not have space to rigorously deconstruct the argument (you often won’t) then try posing critical, thought provoking questions.
e.g., What relevant information was left out that should have been included?
e.g., Does this argument apply universally or only within certain contexts?
e.g., Who might take issue with this argument and why?
If you agree with the argument, include your own thoughtful comments in support of the reading’s main points.
Don’t bother criticizing writing style or esoteric terminology (look it up).
Avoid value judgements (good/bad). If you choose to evaluate the reading, then your evaluation should focus on whether the reading was effective and why.
Why do you think this reading was assigned? Why is this reading relevant within the broader context of the course?
How does this reading connect to a previous reading from the course, another reading/resource for the week, readings from other courses, and/or to current events?
Feel free to reflect on your own background and experiences.
