FINAL PAPER- COMPARISON/CONTRAST The final paper of this semester will be a comparison and/or contrast of two different things of your interest. Similar and opposing parallels should be made about the thematic elements, plot and characters of the two things compared and contrasted. One of these two things MUST be from a writing that we’ve covered in this class.” ANY PAPER THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE A WRITING COVERED IN THIS CLASS WILL BE UNACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT COUNT FOR CREDIT. Both the story and the concept and/or novel, book, article, movie, etc., should be of interest to the writer. This may include but not be limited to a favorite T.V. show, song, entertainer, social trend, etc. This paper should contain a thesis statement that is well supported with vivid details and focus on the specific subject. To demonstrate the type of paper desired for this assignment, the instructor gives an example that compares a literary work, “For Esme with Love and Squalor” from J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories,” to a favorite movie, “Saving Private Ryan.” In the writing of this paper, think about not only the story and whatever idea or medium it’s compared to, but also think about the main underlying messages included. Consider how they relate to our everyday lives. This is not a research paper. The use of researched sources is optional, however, if they are included, they must be cited within the proper MLA style format. Researched sources SHOULD NOT do your thinking, interpretation and analysis for you in this paper. In relating the messages and themes to everyday life, the use of personal experiences is encouraged in the writing of this paper. This paper should be based mainly on the writer’s own thinking and literary analysis skills. In other words, this paper SHOULD NOT be a summary of a writing from the text or of the thing to which it’s compared. It should focus on key messages and ideas from each in relation to the writer’s thesis statement. Have fun writing this paper and good luck.
