See the Assignment Module, Project Instructions page to download the data and questions.
Please read all instructions thoroughly, complete the data analysis, save the necessary screenshots and outputs.
Once you have finished, return to this page and open the quiz to enter your answers and upload the images – once it is opened it must be completed.
You must create/recode variables, conduct the appropriate univariate and bivariate analyses, and then answer the multiple choice questions.
For each research question, you are required to upload a Word document showing your work (screen shot, pivot tables, or output). You will not receive points for your answers if you do not upload a document showing your work.
The last section of this assignment requires you to provide a short summary of your findings.
Project Questions:
Researchers and policy makers are interested in identifying the factors that influence violent crime in the United States and whether or not these are the same across different parts of the country. Two factors are being discussed: poverty and whether the death penalty is legal. Therefore, you have been asked to conduct a study to answer the following research questions:
Does poverty influence violent crime among US states?
Does having the death penalty influence violent crime among US states?
Are there specific areas of the country where the death penalty is more common?
Does violent crime vary across regions of the country?
Does poverty vary across regions of the country?
Details:
To answer these questions, the concepts have been conceptualized/operationalized as:
Violent crime = the violent crime rate per (100,000) residents in 2014
The data came from the UCR and includes all violent crimes reported to the police
Death penalty legalization = whether or not a state has the death penalty
This information was pulled from BJS
Coded 0 = death penalty is not legal, 1 = death penalty is legal
Poverty = the percent of the population in each state that lived below the poverty line in 2014
This information came from the U.S. Census Bureau
Part of the County = region of the country as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau
Four regions coded:
1 = North
2 = Midwest
3 = West
4 = South
This means that you will need four variables: region of the country, death penalty, violent crime rate (per 100,000), and the percent of the population living below the poverty line.
Important:
Please use the data file provided to answer the research questions.
Directions
Using the data provided, answer each research question thoroughly.
For each of the research questions, you are required to recode variables, conduct the appropriate analysis, and then answer the multiple choice questions.
For each research question, you are also required to upload a print screen of your work. You will not receive points without proof of your work.
The final section of the assignment asks you to summarize your findings in a paragraph.
The assignment will be available on November 15 and is due on December 6th at 5:00 pm EST. After the due date, I will grade the uploaded files and the essay question and revise scores accordingly.
In the documents below, the assignment questions and data file allow students to review the questions and conduct analyses prior to opening the assignment (in quiz format) in Canvas. However, this list only includes the questions. It does not include the multiple choice response options.
