ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

For this assignment, you will identify and discuss an example of a logical fallacy. Follow these steps to complete this assignment:
Open the Sample Fallacies handout in Unit 6: Part 2 Assignments folder.
Read through the Sample Fallacies PDF, and select one example.
Create your first post. Type the example into the post, and then write a paragraph to answer the following questions:
What type of fallacy or error is being made in this example? [Remember: the list of Common Fallacies can be found in Unit 6: Part 2: Assignments folder.)
Why do you believe this is the error being made? Explain your selection.
After you have posted, you may return to discuss other examples with your classmates.
Extra Credit Opportunity: Once your first post has been made according to the instructions above, you may return to the forum and reply to a classmate’s post to discuss their answer – do you agree or disagree with their label? Why? (To receive extra credit, you must explain your reasoning, using specific examples from the post or sample fallacy.) You may make up to two replies; to receive credit, replies must be thoughtful and well-written.
You can earn up to 10 pts extra credit. (5 points for each response.) You may only earn extra credit after your initial post has been made.

HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)

Identifying the kind of fallacy or error being made is the first step in examining a logical fallacy. The Unit 6: Part 2 Assignments section contains a list of frequent fallacies. The following stage is to justify your belief that this is the error being made once you have determined the type of fallacy being used.

You need to back up your analysis with examples and proof in your essay. You might also want to think about the context of the fallacy’s use and how it affects the message or argument being made. Finally, it’s critical to present a conclusion that sums up your research and offers suggestions or ideas for avoiding the detected mistake in future discourse.

If you include outside information in your essay, be sure to credit your sources clearly and concisely. Also, if you decide to take advantage of the extra credit option, make sure you respond to your classmates’ contributions thoughtfully and professionally.
