Dear students, this is your final project. It will contain several sections usually found in business plans or grant proposals. Feel free to use any ONE set of guidelines for such documents to help you with your writing style. In reality, these sections are longer, but grasping the gist of the process is a good start and should come handy in the future. This task combines the entire body of knowledge presented in this course and required for a design of a cell culture production.
Required volume and format: 3 pages (+/- ½ page), not including references. Use standard font (such as Calibri, Cambria, or Times New Roman). Page set-up should be for single-spacing on 8½”x11″ paper, margins should be ¾” to 1″. Each section should be titled using the header, subsections should be preceded by smaller headers.
General description: You need to develop/describe a new biotech process for producing a specific molecule in cell culture. You need to find a real molecule, which is NOT yet produced in the cell culture, and identify its potential use and reasons for developing a new process. It will include all sections covered in class: from selecting cell type, medium, physical and chemical conditions, methods for assessment of cell growth and viability, product amount and quality, as well as picking a bioreactor type, with all necessary elements dictated by the selected cells/product/conditions; process parameters, and finally contamination and genetic integrity monitoring. All these must be logically connected. ANY TWO of these elements should be suggested by you (you can borrow them from published work that deal with other questions), while the rest of the steps should be more or less straight forward, standard. Your two novel suggestions need to be covered in more detail, providing logical justification and also sources of similar (not identical) work that might have inspired you to try that.
Please, keep in mind that repeating the most important points of your proposal in more than one section is perfectly fine, the key ideas must be visible at all times.
Make a descriptive and catchy title. Mention if it is a grant proposal or a business plan.
A: Sections for a business plan:
Company mission: 2 sentences
This section should describe your hypothetical company that will be making the product in the way you describe.
Executive summary: 1 paragraph (~4 sentences)
This section is a summary which provides general overview of the project, identify the novel ideas and their combination with well-tested approaches, emphasizing the benefits.
Market research and competition (1/4 – 1/3 page)
Here you need to find a 1-3 (not more) of actual companies that make similar products, and briefly suggest the reason for your approach to have a competitive edge.
Science: description of the procedure. (1.5 – 2pages)
This is the biggest section, and it can have several subsections. You do not need to provide detailed descriptions unless they are crucial for understanding the process or proposed by you for the first time. You need to name exact technique(s)/materials you plan to use with a short logical justification why it is a good choice. Please, mark in bold the two parts you propose as novel approach.
Back-up strategy (2-3 sentences)
Here you need to briefly suggest alternative use for your procedure and/or possible future development.
You can use either numeric or alphabetic referencing format. Please, make it a separate page. Suggested number of references is 5-7.
4. B: Sections for a grant proposal:
Abstract (~ 4 sentences)
This section is a summary (you can write it at the end). Here you need to include general field/need for such research; methods focusing on your novel suggestions, and proposed outcome.
Background (1/4 -1/3 page).
Here you search the literature for both very similar and very different approaches to clarify your position in the field. Main focus should be on your product and your novelties.
Research plan (1.5 -2 pages)
This is the biggest section that could have several subsections. You do not need to provide detailed descriptions unless they are crucial for understanding the process or proposed by you for the first time. You need to name exact technique(s) you plan to use with a short logical justification why it is a good choice. Please, mark in bold the two parts you propose as novel approach.
Significance (2-3 sentences)
Summarize the significance of your novel suggestions.
Future plans (2-3 sentences)
Briefly outline further development of your proposal and suggest additional/alternative use for it.
You can use either numeric or alphabetic referencing format. Please, make it a separate page. Suggested number of references is 5-7.
