Conduct a discussion on the topic of forest certification. You need to begin a thread on a new topic chosen from among the following broader subjects and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Please make sure that your posts are meaningful and have substance.
1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to a private forest landowner of each certification scheme, FSC and PEFC?
2. As a consumer, how will what you have learned about forest certification affect your purchases? (Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer to this question. This is America and, last time I checked, individuals still have the right to make purchase decisions according to their own free will.)
3. How do you think competition between FSC and PEFC-member certification schemes has strengthened and/or weakened the standards and practices of each?
4. Independent certification of environmental responsibility practices in resource extraction and production of materials exists only for wood products. Discuss why similar standards are needed or not needed for other materials such as metals, plastics, and masonry (bricks, concrete, etc.).
5. Discuss whether or not green building programs (LEED, NAHB, Green Globes) should include a method that compares the environmental impacts of using different materials for similar purposes, i.e., wood vs. steel studs and joists in house construction.
