assignment 1:
Why do bones bend but not break.
Bones allow us to live and support things through out our entire lives that as stated in the article, bridges and airplane wings could not sustain periods of time and stress as our bones in the body. Muscles prevent failure by controlling where high stress occurs. “It is the amount of energy that can be absorbed before it breaks that defines a bone’s resistance to fracture” (Burr, 2011). Rats and mice have homogenous bones, because they have bones that are not subjected to large loads and their species has not been for decades. Due to bipedalism, our bodies have adapted over time to take on stress in bones via the help of the muscular system. Micro damage or very small cracks occur in bone that allow it to release energy which high drama would cause the bone to fail. These micro cracks allow the bones to stay strong and continue to function daily. The bones need to have an equilibrium of cracks and repair in order to be most successful at function. The muscles in our body dissipate energy for our bones at a variety of levels. The muscles minimize damage and prevent fractures and this is why our bones don’t break but bend, it’s all about energy.
