Answer the following 2 questions:
1. Orientalism Key Concept Review: We initially engaged Orientalism in Smith’s “Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy.” As Smith writes, “The logic of Orientalism marks certain peoples or nations as inferior and as posing a constant threat to the well-being of empire” (68). How do this week’s films (Aladdin and Mulan) and learning materials deepen your understanding of Orientalism as a gendered project? For example, how might depictions of gender – including gender non-conformity – within Mulan relate to Orientalist constructions of (East) Asian peoples and communities? How might Aladdin affirm or otherwise relate to Orientalist constructions of Arab men/masculinity? Please include specific examples from one of this week’s assigned films and engage at least one additional element from our Week Eight learning materials (150 words).
2. Re-Imagining Children’s Media Activity: Please respond to one of the following prompts. This application activity anticipates the format and approach of our Children’s Media Project (≈100 words).
1. How might a film based upon Maxine Hong Kingston’s “White Tigers” differ from Mulan? With attention to gender and race, what might an audience that includes children learn or carry forward from your imagined film?
2.Aladdin’s fictional Agrabah is a muddled, Orientalist rendering of Arab, West Asian, and South Asian cultures. Could you amend or re-work Aladdin to disrupt or counter this Orientalist messaging? With attention to gender and race, what might an audience that includes children learn or carry forward from your imagined re-working of Aladdin?
3.Please imagine an alternate narrative or resource (zine, infographic, vlog, etc.) that disrupts or counters Orientalism. With attention to gender and race, how might you engage intersectional approaches in creating this narrative or resource?
