After reading and discussing Zanardi’s article about a social systems perspective, consider how he takes a wider view than many others do when considering a moral controversy. Without mentioning Friedman, Zanardi puts forward a theory of moral decision-making that draws from social systems instead of the profit motive. On p. 64 he writes, “anticipating a better way of living demands expanded horizons.” The anarchist anthropologist David Graeber makes a similar point when he writes about how most folks “have been taught since a very young age to have extremely limited political horizons, an extremely narrow sense of human possibility.” As you consider ethics, morals, values, principles, and all the other vocabulary of moral reasoning, what do you think it means to expand your horizons? Can you give examples of this happening for yourself or for coworkers?
I will award you a small amount of extra credit if you can briefly make sense in your own words of the distinction Zanardi draws between f-probability and v-probability in his essay. No googling the answer though. Good guesses welcome.
