1. You will design a network based on the information learned throughout this course. You will follow these guidelines:
a. This is not a “group project.” This is an individual project.
b. You must choose the name of the company, type, size and nature of the company. Make sure you include the answers to the questions presented below.
c. You will be designing a LAN (one LAN, one office operation – minimum 10 computers, maximum 20 computers or nodes). Make sure you include the answers to the questions presented below.
d. This company is “new.” No existing equipment has been installed.
2. Follow writing guidelines please. A PowerPoint presentation with the details of the project is acceptable or you may type your information to a Word document.
3. Attach copies (print screens) from vendor’s ads (from the Internet or other sources) as proof of cost. If I do not see the price of the item displayed, you do not receive credit for the print screen nor the price.
4. You are required to submit two diagrams; one logical and one physical.
a. The logical diagram should display the topology of the network with the IP addresses and their respective subnets.
b. The physical diagram should display where in the office each computer (or node) is located. You should display the walls, the closets etc…it is like a builder’s set of plans displaying the location of each node (computer, server, router, hub, etc). Think of it as an aerial view of the office space. Of course you also need to add some type of naming convention that will identify each one from the other. Note: some sources define a physical diagram as the cable diagram, we are taking it a step higher here, thus the reason for the clarification.
c. As a precaution please submit print screens AS WELL AS the original file of your diagrams. There are many diagrams/software packages out there (Visio, SmartDraw, CADE etc.). Since I do not have all the available software packages in the market, or just in case your version is older or different from the software I use, the print screens will allow me to view them without the need of opening the original file. HOWEVER, I do require the original file to make sure you were the one completing this work.
For an example of physical and/or logical diagrams see:
https://www.edrawsoft.com/Network-Diagram-Examples.php (this is what I look for in a physical diagram even though this site defines it a tad differently) or the following.
Using a building diagram, create a network layout/cabling diagram that includes:
Telco demarcation point if necessary
Wiring closet
Cable runs
Physical locations of important network devices
FAQ – “What information should I include?”
List all network devices and endpoints.
A network device is anything that is used to transfer data from one point to another. This includes routers, switches, hubs, remote access equipment, firewalls, etc.
Endpoints are workstations, servers, printers, etc.
Don’t forget to allow for company growth…future growth…
For grading guidelines, review the Option B Grade Point Distribution carefully.
