b. Using the articles provided separately, “A New Generation of Unrestricted Warfare,” “Army Futures Command is ready for prime time,” and “Getting Gerasimov Right,” write an argumentative essay that answers the question in paragraph 1. This assessment requires you to apply critical thinking skills and effective writing skills. Key elements will include an introductory paragraph, a main body, and a conclusion. The essay must include citations and a bibliography IAW ST 22-2 and use the Army writing style. The three articles are sufficient to answer the requirement for the C170A essay, but you are permitted to use additional sources as well.
c. It is helpful to review the C121 Critical Thinking, C171 Effective Writing, and C172 Writing Workshops lessons. To further assist in writing the essay, the C170 Argumentative Essay Development Student Guide is provided (separate file). While it is not mandatory, use of this guide can help in writing the thesis statement, introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The Argument Analysis Checklist (AAC), covered in the C172 lesson, is another helpful tool when editing your written argument. The Student Guide and AAC are not required, but they are provided for your assistance if desired.
d. Upload the essay and a completed CGSC Form 1009W.
e. Double-space the essay with one-inch margins all around (top, bottom, left, and right) in Arial font, size 12-pitch. The paper should be three-to-five typed pages, approximately 750 – 1,250 words. The pages used for the cover page, end notes, and bibliography do not go against the page limit for the essay. Do not exceed five pages for the essay itself. Use end notes instead of footnotes if needed to avoid exceeding the page count. Indent new paragraphs five spaces.
f. The paper should include the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and be generally free of errors. Use active voice and third person for academic writing; use complete sentences (subject, verb, complement) that communicate full thoughts. Finally, organize the sentences to construct a coherent argument clearly supporting the essay’s thesis.
g. You may not discuss this assignment with anyone other than a DDE faculty member or your academic advisor. Another person may proofread the paper for correctness and clarity; however, this person may not be a current or former CGSOC student. If used, list the proofreader as a reference in the initial footnote or endnote. The Learning Resource Center (LRC), as described on the Blackboard “Home” page, is available as a resource.
h. Always cite the sources used in writing the paper. This includes direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries of the assigned readings, doctrinal references, videos, or any outside sources. If something is not an original thought, a reliable, scholarly source must be cited as a reference using either footnotes or endnotes IAW ST 22-2, the Turabian style of documentation. Do not use parenthetical citations for this essay.
