Initial Post Instructions
This week you will read about architecture. The lesson includes information on Roman architecture, which was greatly influenced by the Greeks and Etruscans.
Locate at least two architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. These can be from any time period after the Greco-Roman period but should be from different periods themselves (e.g., one from Renaissance and one from Baroque). Then address the following:
What is the function of each structure?
How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.
Use examples from the text, the lesson, and the library to help support your answer. Please remember to provide images and citations to help illustrate your points.
Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
(Please respond to the following post as a separate paragraph):
“What is the function of each structure?
This week I chose to discuss the Arc de Triomphe and the Lincoln Memorial. The Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin in 1806 as a commemoration to France’s victory in the Battle of Austerlitz (Murray, 2020). It celebrates military victories, honors service members, and is an iconic piece of French history (Murray, 2020). The Arc was completed in 1836 and remains an active piece in France’s military parade and Tour de France bicycle race (Murray, 2020). The Lincoln Memorial construction was completed in 1922 in honor of the sixteenth president of the United States (NPS, 2020). Abraham Lincoln is credited for the emancipation of slaves and his dedication to freedom (NPS, 2020). The Lincoln Memorial stands as a reminder for the United States for how far we have come as a nation and how far we still need to go for equality.
How does each work exhibit the influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
Chalgrin was partially inspired by the Roman Forum for the Arc de Triomphe (Murray, 2020). The arch itself was a classic piece in Roman architecture. The Lincoln Memorial was inspired by Greek architecture. The thirty-six columns surrounding the memorial are a core piece of Greek design.
How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.
The two works are unique in time period and location, but the function is similar. They both serve as a reminder of what was. Each structure is toweringly large with rich historical context. I think the Arc de Triomphe is more artistic than the Lincoln Memorial because of its intricate stonework. But I think more power in the Lincoln Memorial because of its reference to the United States’s horrifying past. Each is beautiful with its magnificent size and the dedication needed to complete.”
