In your essay, address whether you agree or disagree with the topic statement statement by analyzing ANY TWO institutions of the U.S. political system referenced in Chapters 1-12 of your textbook.
Some examples of institutions that you may wish to consider include, but are not limited to, the following:
Federalism
Constitution
Political Parties
Interest groups
Campaign finance
Electoral rules (single member district, first-past the post, plurality system)
Conduct of elections (lack of uniform electoral processes, voluntary voting, registration methods, polling times, primary elections, electoral calendar)
The Electoral College
The Filibuster
Presidential system vs. Parliamentary system
Steps:
In your introductory paragraph, include a thesis statement on whether you agree or disagree with the prompt and why. This should be followed by supporting body paragraphs. Click here for tips on how to write a good course paper. (Links to an external site.)
If you agree with the statement, EXPLAIN AND PROVIDE EVIDENCE for why you think the two institutions weaken America’s democratic system and suggest proposed alternatives. Your arguments should examine data, statistics and other evidence that support why the institutions weaken America’s democratic system in practice rather than theory.
If you disagree with the statement, EXPLAIN AND PROVIDE EVIDENCE for why you think the two institutions provide a strong basis for America’s democratic system and how they can be improved. Your arguments should examine data, statistics and other evidence that support how the institutions support America’s democratic system in practice rather than theory.
Your response should include a definition of a liberal democracy against which you will evaluate the two institutions that you are proposing to look at. You should also define the two institutions as well as any other important political terms or concepts that you may choose to include.
Sources: You need to have at least 3 scholarly sources and your course book can serve as one of your sources if cited correctly. Include a Works Cited section at the end with your sources correctly cited using MLA or APA style guides.
If you are unclear on what a scholarly source is, how to cite it or how to conduct research, go to the Library and Research Help link on the left to connect with a librarian.
Note: Wikipedia and Blog posts are not scholarly sources and neither are most periodicals or newspapers.
Your course paper should be formatted as follows:
Typed
6-10 pages double-spaced
12-point Times New Roman font
Saved as a Word document or PDF file
